Access Iberia Parish Marriage Records

Iberia Parish marriage records and divorce records are handled through different Clerk of Court channels. Marriage licenses and certified marriage copies are issued through the Clerk's office and may also appear in statewide clerk record systems. Divorce records are district court civil or family case records filed through the Clerk. An Iberia Parish marriage records search may use marriage portals, while an Iberia Parish divorce records search should use civil court records, case details, and certified-copy requests when a judgment is needed.

Iberia Parish Marriage Licenses

The Iberia Parish Clerk of Court marriage license page gives the local license rules. Licenses are issued at 300 Iberia Street, Suite 100, New Iberia, LA 70560, and the Clerk lists license hours as Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, except legal holidays. Only one party must appear to buy the license, but that person must bring the required documents for both parties. The license fee is $35 and may be paid by cash, check, money order, or debit or credit card.

The Clerk marriage license source is the primary local reference for the license fee, waiting period, expiration, identification, and certified-copy rules.

Apply for a Marriage License

The applying party should bring valid identification, birth documentation, Social Security number information, and proof of termination of any prior marriage when that applies. Louisiana-born applicants need an original or certified birth certificate or birth card from the Louisiana State Vital Registry, and a hospital souvenir certificate does not qualify. Out-of-state births need an original or certified birth certificate under raised seal or stamp. Foreign documents require certified English translation, and naturalized citizens must provide a Certificate of Naturalization for the Clerk to retain a copy.

  1. Gather identification and birth documentation for both parties before going to the Clerk.
  2. Bring proof of divorce or death of a prior spouse when either party was previously married.
  3. Provide Social Security numbers or a statement that no Social Security number has been issued.
  4. Pay the $35 marriage license fee by an accepted payment method.
  5. Wait 24 hours after issuance unless a judge signs a waiver, then use the license before it expires 30 days later.
  6. After the ceremony, file the completed license with the Clerk so the certified copy can be issued.

Important: The license must be returned and filed with the Clerk after the ceremony before the certified copy is issued.

Iberia Parish License Fields

Marriage license records are built from the documents and facts supplied at application. The Clerk's research notes do not provide a full form screenshot, but they do identify the practical field inventory: legal identity, birth evidence, Social Security status, prior marriage status, and special proof for foreign or naturalized applicants. If a birth certificate cannot be obtained, a raised-seal or stamped letter from the registration authority stating that no birth record is on file may substitute. If even that letter is unavailable, a judge or justice of the peace may waive the birth-certificate requirement by written order.

Minor and Covenant Rules

Minor marriage rules are strict in Louisiana. Both parents must sign consent forms and bring state-issued driver's licenses or state-issued IDs. If one parent has full custody, that parent must sign and bring certified custody papers. Joint custody requires consent from both parents. Applicants who are 16 or 17 also need a judge's consent, and they cannot marry someone three or more years older. Applicants under 16 cannot marry in Louisiana.

Covenant marriage has the same basic license requirements, plus an original notarized Declaration of Intent and Affidavit with counselor attestation. Covenant status affects marriage obligations and divorce options, so parties should not treat it as a routine checkbox. The Clerk can process the license documents, but legal advice about covenant marriage or divorce should come from counsel.

These rules are record rules as much as license rules. The consent, custody, birth, and covenant documents explain why the Clerk may ask for more than a photo ID before issuing the license. Missing proof can delay issuance, which also affects the 24-hour waiting period and the 30-day expiration window.

Find Iberia Parish Divorce Records

Divorce records are not marriage license records. In Iberia Parish, divorce cases are civil or family matters filed in the District Court through the Clerk of Court. Public portions may be searched or requested through civil record channels when the case is not sealed or restricted. A certified divorce judgment should be requested from the Clerk with the case number, party names, and enough date detail to locate the file.

Family case access has limits. Custody-sensitive material, records involving minors, adoption-related material, sealed filings, and protected personal identifiers may be withheld or redacted. Louisiana divorce filing requirements, grounds, and waiting periods can change and should be checked through current law or legal counsel. A record request should focus on the filed judgment or case file, not on legal advice about eligibility to divorce.

For older divorce records, the Clerk may need a broader search using party names and approximate filing dates. For newer divorce records, a docket number or court event detail can speed the request. Certified copies should come from the Clerk rather than a screen capture from an online search.

Certified Copies and Fees

The marriage license fee includes the application and a certified copy after the completed license is returned and filed. Additional certified marriage copies cost $6. For divorce judgments and other court-file copies, the Clerk's general copy schedule applies when the record is in the court file: $1 per page for public-access photocopies, $2 per page for staff-printed photocopies, $5 plus copy fee for a conformed or stamp-filed copy, and $10 plus copy fee for a certified copy.

Outside Court Record Boundaries

Federal court tools can be useful for broad litigation searches, but they are not substitutes for the Iberia Parish Clerk when the goal is a local marriage license or divorce judgment. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Louisiana and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals may show federal or appellate cases. They do not issue Iberia Parish marriage licenses or certified local divorce judgments.

The Western District bankruptcy court source is included to separate bankruptcy records from local domestic records.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Louisiana website

A bankruptcy case may mention marital status or property, but the certified marriage or divorce record still comes from the proper state or parish court source.

The Fifth Circuit source is an appellate federal court image, separate from Iberia Parish domestic filings.

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit website

Appeals in rare federal cases follow federal court systems, while routine Iberia Parish divorce judgments remain local civil or family records.

For a certified parish record, return to the Clerk of Court rather than relying on federal docket systems. Federal courts may have their own public-access rules and fees, and a federal case caption is not proof of a Louisiana marriage license, divorce decree, or family-court judgment.
